Meeting Summary
- The Division of Epidemiology, Services and Prevention Research (DESPR) held a Scientific Meeting entitled, "Developing a Research Agenda to Improve the Impact of Tobacco Use Quit Lines" on February 23-24, 2005 at the DoubleTree Hotel & Conference Center in Rockville, Maryland. The meeting opened with presentations that gave a brief overview of Quit Lines in the United Stated and Canada. Six panels of researchers, clinicians and practitioners presented their work on: 1) Quit Lines: Integrating Clinical and Population-Based Approaches; 2) Design, Organization, and Management of Quit Line Services; 3) Accessibility, Utilization, and Promotion of Quit Line Services; 4) Quality and Outcomes of Quit Line Services; 5) Financing & Costs of Quit Line Services; and 6) Research Method Issues. Each panel was followed by a 45-minute Q&A/discussion session which produced rich information on the state of the science and future research directions.

There is currently a gap between the high prevalence of smoking problems among individuals with mental disorders and the low rate of identification and treatment by clinicians may be due to lack of evidence-based treatments and/or clinicians awareness and ability to diagnose and treat this comorbidity. The purpose of the symposium is to review the epidemiology, etiology, and management of nicotine dependence among patients with SMDs, including state-of-the-art of evidence-based smoking cessation approaches for nicotine dependent patients with comorbid psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other substance use disorders.

She will discuss her recent Psychopharmacology paper investigating reduced nicotine reward in obesity, and will discuss neurobiological changes, animal behavior, and human laboratory studies. The "Translational Research on Smoking Cessation: Types I and II" symposium showcased Type I and II translational research on the topic of smoking cessation. The first two speakers highlighted Type I translation as they present their research findings on (a) distress intolerance as a basic process that may underlie relapse during smoking cessation attempts; and (b) the use of virtual reality technology to help address physiological reactivity to cue exposure among smokers in treatment. The third and fourth speakers highlighted Type II translational research in their presentations on the (a) delivery of smoking cessation interventions in dentists' offices; and (b) design of policy-relevant smoking cessation research. Speakers included Drs. Carl Lejuez, Patrick Bordnick, Margret Walsh and Jack Hollis, with Dr. Tim Baker serving as Moderator.

Invited experts will present information pertinent to a series of pre-selected key questions (see URL), and a systematic literature review prepared under contract with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will be summarized. There will be ample opportunity for conference attendees to ask questions and to comment on the presentations during open discussion periods. After weighing the scientific evidence, an unbiased, independent panel will prepare and present a State-of-the-Science statement addressing the key conference questions.

Allison Chausmer and Cora Lee Wetherington. This symposium will include presentations from animal and human research programs. Speakers include Drs. Laura O'Dell (University of Texas at El Paso), Edward Levin (Duke University), Cheryl Oncken (University of Conn Health Center) and Eric Moolchan (NIDA IRP).
NIDA is also participating as the NIH representative of an SRNT workshop discussing applying for jobs in academia, medical centers, and industry.

Through breakout groups, it is anticipated that this meeting will generate a list of priority areas for future research efforts in basic research and treatment. This is an invitation-only event.
